# I forgot my Vault Pass

A forgotten Vault Pass cannot be recovered or changed, even by Drime. What to check first, and how to reset a vault to start over if nothing else works.

Your Vault Pass cannot be recovered or changed, by you, by Drime support or by anyone else: your encryption keys are derived from it, and Drime never receives it. If you cannot find it, the only way to use the vault again is to reset it, which permanently deletes the files it contains. Check the points below before you do.

**Symptoms**

- The unlock screen does not accept your Vault Pass and shows **Invalid password**.
- You no longer remember the Vault Pass you chose when you created the vault.

If the screen shows **Failed to unlock vault. Please try again.** instead, the Vault Pass is not the problem: check your connection and try again before anything else.

**Checks**

1. Make sure you are typing the Vault Pass, not your account password. They are two different passwords.
2. If you have several vaults, check the name of the vault you are unlocking: each vault has its own Vault Pass.
3. Look in your password manager and in your browser's saved passwords.
4. Check that Caps Lock is off and that your keyboard is set to the usual layout.

**How to fix it**

### You found your Vault Pass

Enter it on the unlock screen, then click **Unlock content**. See [Unlock and lock your Vault](https://drime.cloud/support/vault/unlock-and-lock).

### The vault is still open in another tab

A vault stays unlocked in the browser tab where you unlocked it, until it is locked or the tab is closed. If it is still open somewhere, download the files you want to keep before you reset the vault. Folders download as a ZIP file.

### Your Vault is open in Drime Desktop

If your personal Vault is unlocked in Drime Desktop for Windows, it shows as a **Vault** folder on your computer. Copy the files you want to keep out of that folder before you reset the vault. See [Vault on your computer and phone](https://drime.cloud/support/vault/vault-on-desktop-and-mobile).

### You cannot find your Vault Pass

Reset the vault (steps below). Your files in this vault are deleted, then you can start again with a new Vault Pass.

**Still stuck?**

Drime support cannot recover a Vault Pass or decrypt your files. Contact support only if the reset itself fails: see [Contact Drime support](https://drime.cloud/support/getting-started/contact-drime-support), and include the error message the dialog shows.

## Reset a vault

> **Danger**
>
> A reset permanently deletes every encrypted file in the vault you choose. It cannot be undone, and Drime cannot bring the files back.

1. At the top right, click your avatar, then **Settings**.

2. Click **Vault**.

3. In the **Reset Vault** section, click **Reset Vault**.

![The Reset Vault dialog with the Vault to reset list, the Confirm your password field and the red Reset Vault button](https://drime.cloud/media/01M59FKVKXX04YGVRMZK6WFR2N/95f7c4dba8f9-web-settings-vault-reset-dialog.png)

4. In **Vault to reset**, check the vault, or choose another one.

Each vault in the list shows where it is (your personal workspace or a workspace), then its number of files and their size. Your other vaults are not affected.

5. In **Confirm your password**, enter your account password.

If two-factor authentication is on, also enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app in **Two-factor authentication code**.

6. Click **Reset Vault**.

The message **Vault has been reset successfully.** confirms the reset.

Open the vault again to set it up with a new Vault Pass. See [Create your Vault](https://drime.cloud/support/vault/create-your-vault).

### If the reset is refused

| Message | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| **The provided password is incorrect.** | Enter your account password, not the Vault Pass. If you forgot it, see [Reset a forgotten password](https://drime.cloud/support/getting-started/reset-your-password). |
| **Two-factor authentication code is required.** | Two-factor authentication is on: enter the code from your authenticator app. |
| **The two-factor authentication code is invalid.** | Enter a fresh code. If you no longer have access to your codes, see [I lost access to my two-factor codes](https://drime.cloud/support/security-and-privacy/lost-2fa-codes). |
| **An error occurred. Please try again.** | Try again a little later. If it keeps failing, contact support with this message. |

### Shared vault of a workspace

Only the owner of a workspace can reset its shared vault. Every member then loses their files in it, not only the owner. When the vault you choose belongs to a workspace, the dialog says so in red, with the workspace's name, and reminds you that every member loses their files.

## Can I change my Vault Pass?

No. The Vault Pass cannot be changed in the web app. If you want a different one, you have to reset the vault, which deletes its files: download what you need first, while the vault is unlocked.
