# Change a member's role or remove them

Change the role of a workspace member or remove them from the workspace, and know what happens to the files they created.

The workspace owner, and members whose role allows it, manage the members from the workspace's admin console.

## Change a member's role

1. Open the workspace switcher at the bottom of the side panel, choose **Settings**, then **Users**.

2. Find the member and choose their new role.

**Role changed** confirms it. The owner's role cannot be changed.

The default roles are **Workspace Admin**, **Workspace Editor** and **Workspace Contributor**, marked **Default**. To create another one, go to **Roles** \> **Add new role**. See [Workspace roles and permissions](https://drime.cloud/support/workspaces/roles-and-permissions).

## Remove a member

In **Users**, open the member's options and remove them. The workspace owner cannot be removed.

## What happens to their files

When a member is removed, or leaves, the files they created in the workspace are transferred to the workspace owner, and count toward the owner's storage from then on.

> **Note**
>
> The ownership of a workspace cannot be transferred to another member.

A member can also leave on their own: see [Leave a workspace](https://drime.cloud/support/workspaces/leave-a-workspace).

## If it doesn't work

| What you see | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| **Cannot change the role of the workspace owner.** | The owner always keeps the **Workspace Owner** role. |
| **Cannot remove the workspace owner.** | The owner cannot be removed, and ownership cannot be transferred. |
| You don't see **Settings** in the switcher | Your role does not let you manage members. Ask the workspace owner or an admin. |
