Move files and folders from your personal space to a team workspace, or from one workspace to another, and what changes for access afterwards.

You can move files and folders from your personal space into a team workspace, back to your personal space, or from one workspace to another. You do it from the same **Move to** dialog as any move.

## Move items to another workspace

1. Select the files or folders, right-click them and choose **Move to**.

   Shortcut: `Ctrl` + `Alt` + `M` (`Cmd` + `Option` + `M` on a Mac). The dialog shows where the items are now, under **Currently saved in:**.

2. At the bottom of the dialog, click the workspace selector and choose the destination workspace.

The list shows your personal space and each team workspace with its number of members, for example **3 members**. The dialog then shows the folders of that workspace, from its top level, and your Drive switches to that workspace too.

3. Open the destination folder.

4. Click **Move here**.

If an item with the same name is already in the destination folder, a number is added to the moved item's name.

To keep the originals where they are, use **Make a copy** instead, choose the workspace and the folder the same way, then click **Copy here**. Copying needs the right to download the items.

## Before you move

- You must be a member of the destination workspace.
- You need edit rights on the items you move and on the destination folder.
- Computer backups are read-only on the web: their folders can't be moved, and nothing can be moved into them.
- Files in your Vault are kept apart from your Drive and are not moved this way. See [Add, open and manage files in your Vault](https://drime.cloud/support/vault/manage-vault-files).

## What changes after the move

- The items, and everything inside a moved folder, now belong to the destination workspace.
- Members of the destination workspace get access according to their role. See [Workspace roles and permissions](https://drime.cloud/support/workspaces/roles-and-permissions).
- Members of the old workspace lose the access they had through that workspace.
- People you shared the items with directly keep their access, and share links keep working. See [What happens to a share when you move, rename or delete the item](https://drime.cloud/support/sharing-and-collaboration/share-lifecycle).

> **Tip**
>
> To give workspace members one of your files without moving it, share it with them instead. See [Share a file or folder with people](https://drime.cloud/support/sharing-and-collaboration/share-files-and-folders).

## If it doesn't work

| What you see | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| **You are not a member of this workspace** | You are not, or no longer, a member of the destination workspace. If you left it or were removed, ask its owner for a new invitation: see [Accept or decline a workspace invitation](https://drime.cloud/support/workspaces/join-a-workspace). |
| **Cannot move files into a read-only backup folder.** | The destination is a computer backup. Choose a folder of your Drive instead. |
| **Backed up files are read-only from the web.** | The items come from a computer backup. See [Find your computer backups in Drime](https://drime.cloud/support/drive/computer-backups-in-drime). |
| **No valid entries to move** | You tried to move a folder into itself, or into the folder it is already in. Choose another destination. |
| **Move here** stays greyed out | Open a different folder: Drime doesn't let you move items into the folder they are already in, into a backup, or into a folder you are moving. |
