Behind the Cloud – May 2026 Update
4 min read

May has been one of the biggest months in Drime's history. Over the past few months, we've been building a lot behind the scenes. Some projects took longer than expected, others required significant rewrites, but we're finally reaching the point where many of these efforts are becoming available to everyone. This month was focused on shipping. From Whiteboards and Backups to Desktop V2, major Search improvements, Vault upgrades, Passkeys, and dozens of platform improvements, May has been packed with new releases. Here's everything that changed.
Whiteboards are here
One of the most requested collaborative features is finally available.
You can now create collaborative whiteboards directly inside Drime.
Unlike traditional whiteboard tools, Whiteboards behave like real files inside your drive through the new .drimeboard format. You can organize them, move them, share them, and collaborate on them exactly like any other file.
Features include:
Real-time collaboration
Diagrams and flowcharts
Text and rich content
Drawing tools
Arrows and connectors
Slides and presentations
Reactions
Comments
Sharing and permissions
Vault support
And because Whiteboards are integrated into Vault, you can even create fully end-to-end encrypted whiteboards.
Desktop V2 is now available on Windows
This is by far our biggest desktop release ever.
The previous desktop application had accumulated technical limitations over time, making it difficult to maintain and improve.
Rather than patching the existing app, we decided to rebuild everything from scratch.
For the past three weeks, the application has been used by beta testers and early adopters while we monitored performance and stability.
The feedback has been extremely positive.
Major additions include:
Completely rebuilt sync engine
Selective Sync
Custom Drime folder location
File and folder exclusions
Desktop notifications
Network bandwidth limits
Proxy support
Storage management controls
Native "Open With" integration
Open files directly with applications installed on your computer
Share files directly from the desktop app
Copy links directly from the desktop app
We're still actively collecting feedback and shipping updates every week.
Introducing Drime Backups (Beta)
Following the release of Desktop V2, we're introducing Drime Backups.
Backups allow you to protect important folders on your computer by continuously backing them up to Drime.
Unlike synced folders, backups are stored as read-only copies in the cloud, making them ideal for recovery and long-term protection.
Current features include:
Folder backups
Scheduled backups
Backup monitoring
Real-time status
Error tracking
Centralized backup management
This is currently available in beta on Windows and will continue to evolve over the coming months.
Search gets a major upgrade
Search has been one of our biggest focuses this month.
We've redesigned large parts of the search infrastructure to make it significantly faster, more accurate and more reliable.
New capabilities include:
Full-text search inside newly uploaded PDF files
Full-text search inside DOCX files
Full-text search inside XLSX files
Full-text search inside PPTX files
Typo tolerance
Fuzzy matching
Faster indexing
Improved caching
Folder-specific search
To be clear, Drime only extracts searchable text. No AI is used to analyze your documents.
Vault continues to evolve
Vault received several important updates this month.
The biggest change is that every workspace can now have its own Vault.
Other improvements include:
One Vault per workspace
Encrypted sharing links
Whiteboard support
Improved previews
Better reliability
UI consistency with Drive
Encrypted sharing remains fully end-to-end encrypted. Drime never has access to your encryption keys or shared content.
Send & Track improvements
We've continued improving analytics and tracking capabilities.
New additions include:
Better bot filtering
Exclude workspace members from analytics
Real-time presence
PDF click tracking
Video event tracking
Multiple links per file
Drime Sign improvements
Several improvements have been made across Drime Sign.
Faster /sign page
New drag-and-drop sidebar
New editor interface
Improved field handling
Various bug fixes and reliability improvements
Referrals are now available
You can now invite friends and earn additional storage.
Available from Settings → Invite Friends.
How it works:
Share your referral link
A friend signs up
They verify their email
Both accounts receive 5GB of storage for 365 days

Features include:
Automatic contact creation when sharing with someone
Sharing suggestions
Dedicated Contacts page to manage your network
Remove contacts at any time

What about macOS?
We know many of you are waiting for Desktop V2 on macOS.
The wait has been longer than expected, but we wanted to make sure the rewrite was worth it.
The Windows release has given us valuable feedback and confidence in the new architecture, and we're actively working toward the macOS release.
A note about Desktop V2 upgrades
Desktop V2 cannot automatically upgrade from the previous desktop application.
If you're still using the old version:
Download Desktop V2 manually from drime.cloud/desktop
Uninstall the previous desktop app
Install the new version
In some situations, remnants of the old application can create conflicts even after uninstalling. We've added automatic cleanup mechanisms, but if you encounter any issues, please contact us and we'll help.
Thank you
Every month, Drime continues to grow faster than we expected. With that growth comes new challenges, but also new opportunities to improve the platform.
Thank you again for all your feedback, bug reports, feature requests and support. We read far more than you might think, and many of the features released this month came directly from community feedback.
We're just getting started!
