Shared folders: common questions

Who owns a shared folder, who can delete or download its files, whose storage they use, and what happens when the owner renames, moves or deletes it.

Updated Web
Who owns a shared folder?

The person who shared it. Files that others add to it belong to the people who added them.

Whose storage do the files in a shared folder use?

Each file counts toward the storage of the person who added it, not the folder owner's. In a workspace that bills uploads to its owner, they count for the owner. See Whose storage do shared files use?.

Can the people I share with delete my files?

No. Sharing gives view, edit or download rights, never the right to delete your files. In a workspace, members whose role allows deleting can move colleagues' files to the workspace Trash.

Can someone with Can view download the files?

No. Can view lets them open and preview the files only. To let them download, give Can Download or Can edit. See Sharing permissions explained.

What happens if the owner renames, moves or deletes the folder?
  • Renamed or moved: everyone keeps access, and the share link keeps working.

  • Put in the Trash: the link shows Page not found until the owner restores it; access then comes back.

  • Deleted permanently: access and links are gone for good.

See What happens to a share when you move, rename or delete the item.

How do I leave a folder shared with me?

On your Shared page, right-click the folder and choose Leave folder. Only your own access is removed. See Find files shared with you and leave a share.
