The Family Room

The Family Room is your family's shared workspace, billed to the manager. Create it, see who is in it, how it counts toward storage and what happens later.

Updated Web

The Family Room is a workspace that the whole family shares, next to everyone's private files. It belongs to the manager and is billed to them.

#Create the Family Room

Only the manager creates the Family Room, and a family has one.

  1. In the family console, open Family Room.

  2. Click Create the Family Room.

The Family Room page before the Room exists, with Create the Family Room
  3. Choose the name and What members can do in it.

The name is Family Room by default, 3 to 60 characters.

  4. Confirm with Create the Family Room.

The Family Room is ready confirms it.

If your plan does not include a Family Room, the page says Your plan does not include a Family Room.

#Who is in it

Every member of the family is added to the Room, and so is anyone who joins later. A member who leaves or is removed loses access, and what they added stays in the Room. When they leave, they can keep a copy: see Leave a family.

#How it works

The Room is a workspace like any other: folders, sharing, versions, and sync with Drime Desktop. Open it from the workspace switcher, or click Open in Drive on the Family Room page.

The Family Room open in the Drive, with Invite members and Suggested folders

An empty Room shows Suggested folders: Finances, Health, Photos, School and Travel.

The Family Room page shows the Room console. Members who are not managers can read it, not change it.

#Storage

What is added to the Room counts once toward the family storage, in the manager's share. A Family Room always counts toward the family's shared storage. See Family storage and asking for more space.

#If the family ends

The Room stays the manager's:

  • If the manager hands the family over, the Room stays their workspace and its members keep access, but it is no longer the family's room. See Hand the family over to another member.

  • If the manager dissolves the family, they choose to delete the Room or keep it as their own workspace. See Dissolve a family.
