Sharing permissions explained
What people can do with Can view, Can Download and Can edit access, how access applies to folders, and whose storage their uploads use.
When you share with people, you give each of them one of three access levels. You can change it at any time.

#The three access levels
Can view | Can Download | Can edit | |
|---|---|---|---|
Open and preview | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Download | No | Yes | Yes |
Upload into a shared folder | No | No | Yes |
Create folders | No | No | Yes |
Rename and move items | No | No | Yes |
Share with other people and create share links | No | No | Yes |
Delete items they do not own | No | No | No |
Can view is the default level. Whiteboards do not offer Can Download.
#Folders
The access level you give on a folder applies to the folder and to everything inside it. If you change it later, the change applies to the whole content too.
#Who owns what
You stay the owner of the items you share. A file that someone adds to your shared folder belongs to that person. To know whose storage it uses, see Whose storage do shared files use?.
#Leave a share
The people you share with can remove an item from their own list: Leave folder for a folder, Remove file for a file, or Remove from shared for several items. This removes only their access. See Find files shared with you and leave a share.
#Share links
These levels apply to people you share with by email. By default, a share link lets anyone who has it view and download the item, without editing it.
