Track changes in an Office document

Suggest changes others can accept or reject in a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file opened in Drime's Office editor, and who can review a document.

Updated Web

Track changes, also called review, records each change as a suggestion instead of applying it directly. The other people working on the document can then accept or reject each suggestion.

#Who can review

Reviewing needs edit rights on the file. A person who can only view the document, including through a share link, cannot suggest changes: they can comment instead. See Comment in an Office document.

To give someone edit rights, see Who can edit an Office document.

#Use track changes

The review commands are those of the Office editor (OnlyOffice): turn on track changes, then edit as usual. Each change is shown as a suggestion, with its author, until someone accepts or rejects it.

Accepted and rejected suggestions are saved with the document. Each save also creates a version of the file in Drime, so you can go back to an earlier state: see How Office documents are saved, and their versions.

What you see

What to do

You cannot turn on track changes

You do not have edit rights on the file. Ask its owner to share it with you with Can edit.

A link visitor wants to suggest changes

A share link never gives edit rights on an Office file. Invite the person with Can edit instead.
